color code with permanent markers or highlighters, alittle harder to see on black cables but it still works, the trick is to mark BOTH ends so you know where it comes from and then the outlet end so you know where it finishes.

I felt the same, then my computer died, now i'm on windows 7, wonderful platform, just as stable, if not better than xp and after a few 2 minute tweaks got the UI to work pretty close to xp's with some improvements.
