I should add that most supercars of the era were in fact turbocharged. Only the Porsche 959 was able to command instant respect for a six cylinder due to its 911 pedigree and other worldly technology.
The V6 was seen as a quick and dirty way to achieve the required power. It didn’t have the cachet of a V12, and that mattered very much in the 80s/90s. No one was under the illusion that you cannot get more power from a smaller turbocharged engine.
V6? Wimpy sounding? You can make a turbocharged 3.0 V6 sound like the hounds of hell. And these are the 2020's - cylinder counts matter far less, especially in hybrid configurations.
A V4 would have absolutely not made any sense. For a car there is no sane reason to pick a V4 over any other option. The setback for the Xj220 was not the number of cylinders that they could afford in an engine, it was that they had to use an existing engine and making the V12 compliant was out of reach.
Times, they are changing. The XJ220's V6 was the Fyre festival of supercar engines. While it had the power, back then the cylinder challenged engine was a really hard sell and a huge let down for all of us who were salivating over the V12. These days you can get away with 4-bangers on premium cars and 3 on hypercars.…
