At my grocery, the cost (per ounce) to buy shredded cheese is pretty much exactly the same as it is to buy a block of cheese (your generic sharp cheedar, for example). Given that I have more use for shredded cheese than a block of cheese, it's a no-brainer for me to have it shredded in advance.

The truth is, these gray-area scoring decisions are lobbied and discussed all the time. The Indians were simply trying to protect the ERA of their pitcher (1 less earned run, yo).
