Even the Mega Man games could be finished very fast, that didn't stop me from playing them to death!

I don't think that you should be punished for dying, but the danger of losing substantial progress if you die should be ever-present. Like in bullet hell games, literally the only way to get better is to play until you die, start over and repeat the process until your skills improve and you learn from your mistakes.
