This reminds me very much of what happened between me and one of my best friends.

This may not cut it for you, but something to consider—volunteering. The majority of volunteers, regardless of the cause/charity, are female. They may not be there to meet men (probably not; little chance of that) but it's a good way to get to know people in a casual yet friendly environment.
