PokéStop and Gym locations all source from Ingress portal locations. When Ingress agents were submitting new points of interest to Google/Niantic, there were a number of guidelines. One of them was that public places of worship were valid portal locations.

Do people not understand that the ‘PokeStop’s that they have in this game come from the points in the game Ingress?

Great game. It was the perfect balance between serious and absurd. After this game the series became just overly absurd and lost it’s way.

It should be noted that not all portals in ingress work that way. I work on a college campus that has 4 on it and not a cent out. Some businesses can do that but the majority are public spaces or art.
