Supporting a friend's decision to build/rebuild/modify/etc a car should invoke the same logic as supporting your friend's decision regarding girlfriends/boyfriends/spouses/pets/etc. If it makes them happy, then by all means go for it. If it makes them miserable, poor, and lonely, then tell 'em to drop it.
Driving a manual in traffic taught me that sometimes it's worth suffering some extra annoyances for that brief window of glory. (And that it's easier to creep along in 1st gear and leave a gap in front of you instead of constantly feathering the clutch).
At the end of the day, it's just a car. An inanimate object on wheels. It's not special; rather it's the memories and the people behind and around it that are special. The car is just along for the ride, so to speak.

I will grant that he does indeed appear to be quite reasonable in his responses, and I would agree that all things considered, he has something of a fair point with regards to asking BMW to show the customer the service that they are due.
