Put the tank valve on off, hold the bike at an angle for a bit so the carb reservoir drains, load bike. I've been doing it for ages with my honda minibikes when going to a far off meeting with the bike in the back of my focus break, never got stuck in fumes.
Edit: Carb usually has a drain screw as well to make it easier
