Better multitasking. Having more display area isn’t just to show something bigger. The other primary use would be to have more stuff open at once. And for that a hinge isn’t a big deal.  I don’t think I’d call the original ending “happier”. It’s definitely better and makes more sense, but not happier. The US ending is just kind of ambiguous as to what is happening.
