History is often dictated by the wealthy. Swords were a rich man’s toy for the most part, so they have an outsized cultural cache.

That’s because most of Samurai fiction is based on the Edo-period, when military armaments were strictly controlled by the Shogunate, and the Samurai usually walked around with just their sword as the symbol of their status. And besides, swords were always the go-to duelling weapon.

I still find it interesting how much attention gets paid to the Katana, and swords in general, when they’re fundamentally just sidearms. Wars were won and lost on the backs of the Tanegashima, Yumi and Yari but most people don’t even know what they are.
