he does something, people get a bit re-hyped / pissed that it took forever, than he takes another forever to do some more things. but im okay with this really.

"Working" is a bit of an overstatement. He fiddles with it when he has nothing better to do. He had no business selling this game when he had no long term plan to finish it.
I lost interest about 7 months ago. It's going to be really hard to convince myself to go back. I don't want to get back into the game only to be abandoned for another year. Hell, for that matter, I'm not convinced we'll see this update anytime soon.
thing is, it's not actively. It's like the game took a far far back seat. The type of back seat in a limo, the back seat so far back that the driver has to yell to whomever is in the back seat in order to communicate. Many single devs update their games weekly on steam. Gonna have to side with most folks here, nothing wrong with working slowly at his own pace (solo dev teams are rough), but it's not much to at least knock out a tweet letting the thousands of people that sent him money know what he's up to, you know... as opposed to just blowing it all on hookers and blow in Cancun.
Doing things at his own pace is fine, its not giving updates even if only to say "Still working on it" that is what is annoying me, as I purchased the alpha to keep him working on the game. Even just a blog update every month or so...

People aren't just mad he's taking so long to put out updates. People are mad because he doesn't communicate progress toward those updates.
