Basically says you have to pay the composer exactly X and you also have to Directly pay the union X and the union gets X% royalties for the next X years. Apparently the value of X was way to high.

And the truly hilarious thing is, we keep electing the very people who do this to us. Republican, Democrat, it don't matter. Tell us what we want to hear during an election year through the media mouthpieces, and we'll totally forget all the shit we got the previous three years.
Just admit you got lucky.
It surprises me that, especially in the US, nobody does anything about this. For a country based on the ideals of "freedom" there sure isn't a lot of freedom going around anymore.
That statement right there is a blatantly obvious problem.
There's nothing in the law that says you must treat your employees fairly in all situations, otherwise you wouldn't have at-will states, or states where people can be fired for being gay. Unions have always been accused of being useless and/or violent by the people at the top who want to exploit the people at the…
I doubt it would raise the money because that money would go to the union who are trying to stop him earning a living in the first place. People are not generally keen to hand over their money to such jackasses who run the union since that will lead to more blackmailing from the union against many more members given…
Why do you think that we have those laws?
Yes and along with the continued irrelevance of unions in the modern age wages have continued to go up and pensions are available for all!! We're truly living in a post-union paradise!
Yeah, ask worker in China how relevant unions fighting for regulations and fair wages are in 'the current age'. Or garment workers in Bangladesh. Fact is without collective bargaining workers have no fucking clout to stop business owners from railroading them. Just because stupid humans are stupid doesn't mean we…
That comment reminded me of when my father was forced to join the Steelworkers Union back in 1959. After the union got in, the place he worked went on strike a number of times and when it did, it left him without work, sometimes for weeks and since he had a family to support he would clean up ditches for a few dollars…
My employer is not mandated by law to give me a raise, but my union manages to negotiate one fairly often. Every year, but one, that I've worked at my current job they've gotten us one. The one year they didn't, the still got us a bonus that wouldn't of happened otherwise.
Except none of what you said is actually true in the slightest. The issue isn't unions, in general, it's how some unions, AFM included, are conducting themselves against the wishes of and to the detriment of a broad majority of their members.
"I don't think anybody give you anything because they like you," said AFM President Hair recently, "In the union business they give you things because they are afraid of what you are going to do to them."
I honestly thought the video laid it out pretty well but I'll see if I can make it more clear.
Holy crap this union leadership sounds like a bunch of fucking idiots, it almost mirrors the old leadership of my union. Thank the stars we finally got rid of our idiots and have some proper leadership. I hope that they can do the same.
Some states in the U.S. essentially require that you be part of the union in your given field in order to work. In certain other industries, it is effectively impossible to work (beyond a certain fairly low level) unless you are part of a union.
That's...not actually true!
If you don't think there are still issues with employers exploiting employees, well...I don't even really know what to tell you.
Actually there are a lot of things not mandated by labor law in the US that are in many competing countries and upheld primarily here by unions - paid leave being one of the most basic.
In this particular field, I agree with you - but unions still serve an important purpose in other industries.
