I think that sentence may be somewhat inverted.

I just got back from Otakon. There was so much GOTG merch already, made in the last week. I overheard a ton of people quoting and singing the songs. It was surreal, it feels like the movie is already years old and has fully invaded our pop culture. Well done James Gunn and the Marvel crew.

Marvel/Disney still makes money off of Fox and Sony Marvel films, so they don't really care one bit. Free money for them and they still make their own, better movies.

I don't dismiss the opinion of those who dislike the film based on criticism of the film itself. I dismiss the opinion of those who dislike the film based on comparison to an idealized memory of childhood that doesn't hold up to scrutiny of the original work.

I missed out on the TMNT, Transformers, and other cartoon waves that have deep nostalgic fanbases. When the first Transformers film came out, I actually enjoyed it as a amusing action romp that didn't take itself too seriously. However, I had some majorly nerdy friends who whined about bay had "ruined their childhood"…

My 80's nostalgia was indeed stupid, as the cartoon was corny as hell. Having rewatched the 1990 TMNT film, though, that still holds up as a great movie.
