It's better than Phantom Hourglass. If only for normal controls and visuals. It's a real 2D Zelda that plays like it should, first one since Minish Cap almost 10 years ago. Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks did not work as 2D Zeldas for me.

I, personally, find the gameplay fun. A two-handed mace certainly feels weighty. I never quite understand people who talk to the contrare of that. You slowly swing it, things die or stagger and a satisfying meaty sound occurs when the hit connects.

what difficulty did you play zelda on? i played through on normal first and died one time. i felt the game was way to easy and the difficulty should have been somewhere between hero and normal for the default.
