This seems suspect. Rockstar patched the game so that the driver could see the instructions in october. (Edit: The driver can see the direction arrow now, but still not the checkpoints. )

You mean depth of field, not field of view. Field is view is how wide your view is (also something you can adjust for the first-person mode in GTAV now). Depth of field is how much of the screen is in focus, or at/between which distances the objects in front of you are in focus, to be precise.
