Bad competition is really no better and can be worse than no competition. Competition that is offering crap stuff but still doing well can encourage the other side to do the crap stuff too because it works (witness the PS4 now has a fee for MP).

I have seen plenty of stories where I would say I could see where the cop might be defending self and I agree people are quick to blame the cop. But in this case....
