I think i recall that one of the teasers, etc, mentioned that the 11th pilgrimage (i.e. the next one) isn't what they expected. Which along with the sixers make sense if it is all in the same timeline.

Pretty sure they still have some normal guns though, i.e. the sixer in the infirmary was suffering from ye olde gunshot wound.

The reason it looks so big to them was probably the Moon Illusion, i.e. the moon tend to look a loot bigger when close to the horizon. And since all the smog would have made it much harder to see when at the horizon (since the light have to penetrate a larger amount of smog) they could probably have observed said Moon…
