AMD put out a lot of chips, but they didnt really improve all that much. A Q6600 (bottom end Intel Intel Core 2 Quad) holds up pretty well against AMDs 6 core 1100T Black Edition.

Yeah, it sucks that Intel keeps switching its socket types. It used the 775 socket (Core 2 Duo/Quad) for a couple of years, and Im hoping the 1155 socket is the final socket type for the i3/5/7s.

Current Intel processors destroy current AMD processors. Its ridiculous. I know what you mean about it being overwhelming though. I built a computer in 2005 and when I had to do it again in 2008 I had no idea what I should be looking for, and now that Im looking to build another one soonish I still feel kinda lost.

You just need to know socket types. If youre buying on Newegg itll tell you the socket type (the Sandy Bridge chips use 1155, and those are the Intels youre going to want to buy).
