I recommend steering clear of the Nexus 4. A significant fraction of the Nexus 4's (and Galaxy Nexus) have a "Sleep of Death" issue with no resolution or acknowledgement from Google. No software/app commonality identified among users at this time, either. It basically impairs your phone to the point of uselessness.

I think DoggCatcher really stepped up its game recently. They seem to be having updates every couple weeks or so. Most recently, they integrated variable speed into the app; so no more need to use external app to control that.
