And honestly, some of the rebel characters felt pretty under-developed, so the time we spent learning about White Cloak’s “No Good Very Bad Day” at work could have been better spent fleshing out the people we are supposed to care about.

This. By far one of the most bold uses of cinematography in any Star Wars movie ever and if it makes the dough, anything goes. Incredible use of depth of field, color etc.. in terms of setting the mood and carrying the story beyond the screen directly into your emotions.
