Have you read the new mistborn series? It takes place...I think 200 or 300 years in the future from the last one in a Victorian setting. I think the ending of the original mistborn series was designed to be a little ambiguous and fully explained in the later trilogies.

I would suggest the Mistborn series. It's like Dishonored but with a richer magic system and setting.
