It's taken to a ludicrous extreme yet plays it straight... it might have been a good Spaceballs style parody but it's not.

I too was utterly terrified by Dustin Hoffman's over-acting, in fact the heavy handed acting in general was nightmarishly over the top still in my dream all I see is this:

Basically the momentum has to balance out, if you want to push yourself one direction through space you need to push some matter the opposite direction. You don't have to shoot at much, you can fire a stream of atoms at large fractions of the speed of light to get enough thrust.
