I once flew a turboprop flight in the window seat of that row (in parallel to spinning turboprop blades.). Needless to say, all I could think about was being impaled by a grenade'ed turboprop blade until the thankfully short flight ended.

I guess it is a matter of out of sight/out of mind. The blades of a turbofan "jet" engine are spinning at ~2x the speed of those big prop blades. And believe me, if those jet blades separate, the engine nacelle isn't containing them.

That, and the auto industries continued view that "Oh its great for racing, then it must great for street cars" theory. F1 style steering wheel = cool, F1 style automatic, not so cool. I am not trying to win a race to work, I just want to ENJOY my drive to work.

It's because of what the market demands. If the market actually bought manual cars, they would make more. As of right now, it's just enthusiasts that care, or the random crazy like myself.
