Yup. They scout for people in local touristy spots. If you notice people are always coming from and traveling along a very specific route. Also, there is always a white van following. It has the crew, and the scout in it. The money they get in the end is funny money.

I think those last two points are more age related than you think. Well, in our circle he was the last single guy (until the unit got a new guy but he's since shacked up with someone). So I don't have much in common with the other wives. I'm constantly analyzing our group dinners, or outings wondering if they are judging me after the fact.

Extrapolate on your bitchiness. For me, I think I'm just stuck up. Not snooty, but just I'm too square, too business all the fucking time. I have a hard time letting loose which then makes me look like the bitchy friend.

Sounds like Atkins or some other protein based diet. Which is actually a pretty established, and safe (if you are healthy and have no underlying medical issues) way to lose weight.
