I think it's his iconic status that makes him get so high up on all these lists. Like Link is to the adventure genre (a silent protagonist), Gordon Freeman is sort of seen as the same to the shooter genre. More of an icon than someone with character traits.

If he knew he wasn't going to be able to pay for games, why enter the contest in the first place. There really is no reason to pirate games as far as I know.
