I have two thoughts:
1) he wanted to take his life on his own terms?
2) once he was in there and realized the gravity of the situation (trapped there forever!) he couldn't hack it, freaked out and changed his mind.
If the guy has psychological or mental illnesses or issues (which I'm sure he does, not that it even comes close to excusing his crimes) then it's possible he just had a drastic change in mental state.
The stress of being locked up in a box for life was too much and he finally felt like those three women. Or he got tired of fellow inmates taking turns with him and he finally felt like those three women. God bless them for surviving ten years; he couldn't last a few months.
