There are also good legal reasons for keeping your phone locked in some jurisdictions. The Ontario Court of Appeal recently ruled that screen locked cell phones require a warrant for a law enforcement search, but if it's not locked the bar is much lower.

I think pattern locks are even worse as there are fewer unique possibilities. I'm basing this on the 3x3 grid that Android lock screens typically have.

Accessing via tablet makes sense. Storing it on the tablet does not, particularly given the lack of full disk encryption on iPads.
