"until it's smoking"? Please tell me that you don't do this in a non-stick pan. Over heating Teflon coated pans by heating them empty can release toxic fumes, that can not only make humans not feel well, but they can kill many pet birds. It's the same reason you don't want to put non-stick into the oven.

Contract engineering: very high pay with time-and-a-half overtime, but few to no benefits, and near zero job security. (Still worth it though)

The problem I have with this method is that, if this is the only way you learn to multiply, then all you really have is a trick to get an answer, not an actual knowledge of how to multiply. It certainly won't help you if you don't have pen and paper handy, and need to multiply something in your head.
