It's not really just the faceplates, I guess a more trivial reason would be the Super Famicom-colored buttons (I know the XL has the letters colored, but not the buttons)... but a more important reason is some people prefer the smaller size for better portability, not everybody has huge, deep jeans pockets.

actually he was dragged back in for Brawl and again for 4, taken by surprise both times he was announced to be the director for the games. Once we get to the next console generation, it might be interesting to see someone else take the reigns.

If they want to maximize their profits, they could maybe have smaller budgets for their movies instead. Let the storytellers/animators get creative with their limitations as, heck, simpler CG can be quirky if the art style's appealing enough.
