From talking to people in Massachusetts it sounds Markey is only vulnerable for much the same reason Crowley and Engel were-- he's not in district (State) often and has mediocre constituent service

California’s last Republican Senator left office the same year Bill Clinton was elected to the White House; their last Republican Governor would be hard-pressed to win the Republican nomination at this point given that the state Party has gone off a fucking cliff.

Eh....this goes a bit far; the left represents at best 35-40% of the Democratic base (even less of the Democratic Party as a whole)-- if anything the left has had more influence on the Democratic platform than one would expect given their relatively paltry vote share.
