Bingo, for all the myriad problems with college sports, the pretense of providing and education and the need to maintain eligibility seem to push athletes to at the very least maintain HS academic standing to get into a college

It’s probably significant that a good portion of MLB rosters either never even considered college (US- Japan) or in soms cases High School (South and Central America) - but instead go into what are effectively low paid apprenticeships (minor league baseball). Hockey has the same issue to a lesser extent…
