The Logitech ultralight is cheap for a reason - they're flimsy! Just returned mine last week; the hinge broke after being used for only a few days. Switched to their Folio case/keyboard and have been happier.

The trade off, the incumbents will say, is they have a universal service mandate and new entrants don't. Generally I am quite sympathetic to the plight of new entrants but the whole demand-driven build out model is to their advantage.

Yep, and you can drive out a short trip from St. John's, Newfoundland, and still see the telegraph cable heading under the road (from the old telegraph station that's now a cool museum), along the beach and disappearing into the water. Very cool to check out if you have to be in NFLD.

Interestingly, Charlotte isn't far from a rural area that's getting FTTH. The Burnsville-Spruce Pine area off the Blue Ridge Parkway is in line to get fiber optic connectivity thanks to a $20 million+ Federal stimulus investment. I've still got unlimited data (3G, boooo) through VZW on my iPhone 4. If I get a new phone on contract — goodbye unlimited data. I was hoping for a cheap 5c so that I could get LTE and keep my off-contract, unlimited data status. Alas, not so.

This is an "edge case," but you can end up using a VZW femtocell without knowing you are doing so or intending to do so. If you are in an area with little to no VZW coverage, you can automatically be routed to one of these if it is close and strong. You can't "roam" onto one if you are on a call against a Verizon…
