This is a great book, but Peter Gent's darker North Dallas Forty is (IMHO) our best football novel, followed closely by Fred Exley's A Fan's Notes. Plimton's Paper Lions is novel-like in its literary quality, and Dave Meggyesy's Out of Their League is an excellent look at football of its time.
