The biggest beneficiaries of this "Top Ten" system at UT have to be kids from weak rural and inner-city schools — where a top 10% might not even equate to a top half at a seriously competitive public-high school.

The amount of vitriol directed toward Ms Fisher is fairly staggering - regardless of the merits (or lack thereof) of her court case, her admissions package, and her life choices thus far...

I don't need to know what the school was, but most of the top lib-arts colleges have used need-blind admissions and standardized aid packages for a very long time.

If Abigail Fisher — rural high school, middle-class parents, moderate intelligence and looks — rides a "giant steed of privilege", how do Boris Johnson, George W, the Winkelvii and other true scions of good fortune get around?

*Snooze.* Let us know when you're done with those truffle fries, M.I.A.

Appearance-snarking and violence against women are always wrong on Jez... unless the subject is against AA?

Hmmm... great advice. And it doesn't work across the board because... why?

I'm not sure that's never been a contested point in the debate, even for proponents of affirmative action (and I'm one, fwiw).

Legacy pools at the most competitive schools tend to be stronger than the overall pool.

"Almost the entirety of the non-white world is plagued with the never-ending desire to appear as "western" as possible."

"Grooming" seems a little extreme, surely? The whole sense of the word, in this context, is to illegally exploit a vulnerable minor over time through positive reinforcement. Even under a Jez-type definition, PUA involves exploiting an adult v quickly through negative reinforcement.

If we substitute "social skills" for "technique" is it still intrinsically offensive?

My sense is that normalizing rejection is kinda central to the PUA framework.

You consider teasing a problematic behavior among adults in general, or just when men and women socialize?

I knew one of Mia's nannies. She was never allowed to wash her clothes in the same load w/the kids' clothes.

I had an amazing collection of Spike the Rhino beanie babies - but rich Western poachers got them all, just as Laura warned me would happen.

Given that he was asked by a woman, about her daughter, it'd be a little roundabout for McCain to talk about her (potentially non-existent) son, right?

"it would seem all that more important to have women included in the judging of work that is developed to reach them."

Lucy rocks! Was hoping she wasn't included in your list of FT columnists that induce eye-rolling.

If a comedian came up w/a character who idolized Trump and Patrick Bateman, we'd applaud the sheer implausibility of it.
