I’m going to go out and say this is a good decision for Ford and GM. A strategy is actively choosing what not to do as much as it is choosing what to do. GE shed a ton of market segments a decade or so back. 3M jettisoned many business unit in refocusing on it’s core business.

Lower profit margin, high comparison rate of shopping against used, brand agnostic (outside of corolla, civic, accord and camry). Its a crapshoot segment unless you are the leaders.
