It spoofs all kinds of TV and some movies, throughout the years

The original series was in a Feudal Japan-esque world. The spinoff takes place 70 years after the future, so they utilized that time gap to bring it to a somewhat "Steampunk" feel... It actually fits well with the story, but I won't delve into that because you should watch the series for yourself ;).
