What I would like to know is why this is even a story on Jezebel right now? It feels to me the same way CNN inserts itself into Trump stories. This individual came forward in a non-linear way and, in that process, went around Jezebel.

Yeah, but that’s not how journalism ethics works. The story had credibility but the reporting.... didn’t. No real sources, no real facts to report. If the rumors prove to be true no one at Jezebel gets to gloat. They were beyond reckless in how they handled (and continue to handle) this story. The NYT are the ones that put in the work to actually get to the truth, not just putting out a call for someone to do their jobs for them.
