We are talking at least a century of cheap, plentiful oil and 350 or more years of NG. So changing to other energy alternatives is at least that far off. the US taxpayer is paying for tech development that is far too premature and is thus a waste.

You can't be serious. compare apples carwise: the lotus upon which the tesla is based is 60000 tops while the tesla is 110000 (car and driver numbers). Thats 50000 worth of gas plus the lotus has virtually unlimited range and can operate In extreme cold climates.
