I thought Reach and First Strike were good. The Flood sucked, but that's what happens when you hand over your sci-fi franchise to William Dietz. He's ruined Halo, Starcraft, and Mass Effect, and I'm sure plenty of other franchises too.

Your description is spot-on for the newer Sonic games (read: just about everything past the Genesis era) but the Genesis-era Sonic games were definitely more of a platformer than just run-straight-hit-a-boost-thing-let-boost-thing-skip-half-the-level-for-you.

The library, god I so hate that level. Hundreds upon hundreds of unending aggressive enemies trying to kill you with guns, themselves and just sheer quantity.
