i dont know, i've heard a lot of people saying similar things for tons of movies before. avengers, dark knight rises, etc. yet they went and saw the movies anyway, maybe not in the opening week but definitely in the 2nd or 3rd. i feel this will also be the case for star wars.

i think both liu kang and kung lao are descendants of the great kung lao. + there was a non-canon ending for kung lao in one of the games which stated that he was the reincarnation of the great kung lao.
