i think both liu kang and kung lao are descendants of the great kung lao. + there was a non-canon ending for kung lao in one of the games which stated that he was the reincarnation of the great kung lao.

there was the playable character, we've seen in the series, and there was the great kung lao, who defeted gorro and shang tsung 300 years ago or something
