Former Iowan here. Like with most states, the rural parts of Iowa are filled with bigots and the more urban areas are fine. Some are spectacular (Des Moines and Iowa City are wonderful cities/towns filled with some of the most open-minded people you’ll find.) We even voted Democrat in the majority of recent

[Deleted: redundant to responses later in thread.]

Hated Gravity, LOVED Arrival. It’s such a smart, well-told story that really delivers on an emotional and plot level. (I was bawling like a baby at the end while contemplating the nature of... [spoiler].)

On a slightly optimistic note, it’s nice that more and more comic book adaptations are featuring some non-ingenue type roles/casting decisions (i.e., women over 35 don’t cease to exist.)

If it’s any consolation (it’s not), it’s not a “majority” of Americans who are racist, sexist, bigots — Hillary won the popular vote.

She used “alleged” because the sentence referred to all three girls... the state only successfully prosecuted one of the allegations.

Shut up.

Reminds me of the “Black Jeopardy” SNL skit from a few weeks back in which Tom Hanks played a Trump supporter who grew a reciprocated camaraderie during the game with the black contestants upon discovering a shared distrust of the government.

Doing the lord’s work, Rich.

Yeah... you’re assuming people can target weightloss to specific areas of their body. There are people who are a completely healthy weight who carry large amounts of fat disproportionately in one or two areas (myself: double chin, big time.) If I lost weight, I would be too skinny and it still probably wouldn’t get

Thank you for the great explanation! I feel like I have all the smarts now.

I really don’t understand the science behind CoolSculpting at all. What happens to the cells once frozen? Where do they go?

This. Something about rice and beans really hits the spot for me. It’s one of the few convenient, cheap lunch dishes I’ve been able to find that’s filling yet doesn’t put me in a mid-afternoon food coma. (And EVERYTHING makes me food coma, so that’s not nothing.)

Not quite pertinent, but I’ve been following Jezebel for years (even interned here in early 2010)... can I get out of the greys? Pretty please?

My favorite Jezebel ghost story:

So she did give her eight weeks paid maternity leave? That’s actually very good by US standards.

They’re both in their 30s, though. (They do look young, I’ll give you that.)

Divorce is a TV show. Jezebel has covered it quite a bit, actually.

I don’t recommend incorporating this many products into your skin-care regimen at once. If your skin freaks out, you won’t know which product is the culprit. On the flip side, if your skin starts looking freaking amazing, you won’t know which products are actually helping versus which are just draining your bank

Get a Retin-A rx. It’s pretty much the only thing all derms agree on for actually preventing and TREATING (i.e., existing) wrinkles. With health insurance, my monthly prescription only costs $10 a month. (It’s also great for treating acne.)
