I don’t have any problem with a woman making a conscious choice to be the breadwinner or continue to work or even discussing it, I don’t think the vast majority of commenters on a site like Jezebel would. I think my comment struck a chord in a lot of women who don’t comment frequently because most of the women on here

Yes completely agree. Some of the terminology used for mothers and children on sites like this is horrendously dehumanizing. My guess is a lot of the women who comment are from stable upper middle class backgrounds where defying expectations is doing something like getting married later and opting to not have kids. So

Yes it’s easy to feel cut out and unwanted on articles about parenting on this site. About seven years ago, they linked to an article from a woman describing why she occasionally takes her daughter to adult places and the commenters ate her alive. They even made fun of the child’s name (the woman was Egyptian). It was

I completely agree that there are women in situations where they cannot bring their child safely to work and that is a tragedy and a shame because there is so little affordable childcare in this country - I missed the part of the author’s article where she said she wouldn’t use full time childcare if she could afford

That’s a little naive. Children are not always a choice, anyone who understands the on the ground situation for women’s healthcare, access to birth control, and abortion access in this country knows that full well. Unless you’re one of those people who knows all that good and well, you just don’t think anyone without

I didn’t even know that existed thank you so much for the link!!

I actually feel like you summed up what I wrote really well right there. Contempt is the best word for it.

I agree a lecture at a library is inappropriate and totally not ideal. Then again, a woman I am friendly with just dropped out of college because she failed another course because she had to miss a third class due to one of her children being seriously ill and the rules are you need to have an “a, b, and c childcare

Oh I have been quick with the dismiss button because that tidal wave is fierce!

Oh I understand that some women need to work, it depends on the circumstances of where she (and her partner if she has one) were when she got pregnant - my sister has to work because she makes slightly more than her husband. There are so many factors that go into whether or not a woman works, how much she makes,

I have no problem with however much anybody wants to spend on their pets or their children or their I dunno oil painting hobby? But yes, talking about poor women breeding to praise and lol’s was the end of Jezebel for me for a while. “Squick reflex” is right.

Oh and I’m so happy for you that your family was able to help and it all worked out, kind of nice reading those kinds of endings. My daughter goes to a low income school and a lot of the endings are more fraught. Lotta times where those bootstraps break!

Yeah I got pregnant when I was 19 (lived in a city where the only place for people without insurance to get affordable birth control was a Planned Parenthood with a two month waiting list) and realized quickly that the same progressives who were passionately supportive of my right to have an abortion quickly became

Oh I feel you 100%. I try to think of this site as celebrity gossip with the occasional pleasant surprise. I got kicked in the teeth here a time or two too often in my very early twenties and now I am more hesitant.

I managed childcare by never getting any, lol. To this day, I need to wait until a relative is available to schedule anything I need childcare for. My husband ended up being unable to find work with his degree so he entered a union - it takes five years to “turn out” and make your full wage, luckily he turns out in a

Thanks. I got run off after I argued with another woman, a childless doctor who was making a point about how she hates when people comment about how much money she spends on her dog when poor people who can’t afford children breed all the time and she can at least afford her dog. I got so much pushback I saw this was

Good! That visual makes me smile.

I used to comment regularly on Jezebel for years (under a different name) and stopped because of the feeling the author describes when someone she assumed would be an ally made her feel unwelcome.

If Drake read this he would have the same reaction he had when Madonna kissed him. Don’t think your boyfriend has anything to worry about.

I started my period at nine. I would have given anything to be on birth control to regulate it, it was erratic and I was NINE and terrible at predicting, preparing, and coping with it.
