Most people trying to fight the misinformation are a source of misinformation themselves, albeit generally to a lesser degree. Might be time you just teach people to search for and trust real scientific sources instead of any social network/media...

Surgigcal masks are useless except indoors with just a few people in a small room (barber, doctor’s waiting room, hospital room, etc.). There is absolutely no evidence showing surgical or cloth masks help slow virus spread in very large communities. On the contrary, scientific evidence suggests masks and even hand hygiene are extremely low to insignificant impact in most “high tech” countries (high standard hygiene).

A lot of things can factor into this, but to keep it simple, it mostly depends on the IFR and the R0. There is no clear-cut answer to your question as it varies for each pathogen and the size of the community you want to achieve herd immunity for.

Surgical mask only blocks viral particles from the wearer to the outside. That’s why it’s used by surgeons and to protect patients from germs.

They will touch their face and the mask constantly to move it because it’s not fitting the way they want. They will drop it to have a smoke and put it back on. They will think because they have a mask, they don’t need to stay a few feet away. They will feel safer when they are absolutely not.

SK, Singapour, Taiwan etc. managed the epidemic in their area with strict social distancing rules, massive testing, tracking & isolation of the infected. The use of masks by asymptomatic carriers as a reason for successful containment is anecdotal at best.
