I disagree with this on principle, because I've seen it work. Very rarely (in fact only one instance comes to mind right now) I admit, but this trope can easily be used as a tool just as any other, as long as the production level and intent behind it are warranted.

Well, some could argue that sex could be a useful tool to reveal hidden traits of someone's personality. Who they are when having sex probably isn't the same person that they choose to show in public. Which would give you a deeper connection to the character in question. You know something about them that no one else…
