Yeah, I guess my problem is so many of the inconsistencies were caused by the prosecution and detective teams, and she's being held accountable for them as well. She didn't go in and say "this dude, with this name, raped me." She went in and said she was raped.

I'm curious about a lot of the inconsistencies that aren't being addressed. Things were all one way then and they're all the opposite way now, and people aren't looking for what's underneath.

That all seems consistent with behavior of someone who was raped while drugged.

For me, the Duke case is a story about prosecutorial misconduct, not false rape allegations. That guy went so far off the reservation that he was fired, disbarred, and then sent to jail for that shit. Prosecutors play dirty and send innocent people up the river all the damn time, but rarely, if ever, are they held

Why do you feel like she was most likely lying? I am NOT familiar with the case, I just thumbed through the wiki, and honestly most of the 'lies' seem consistent with "woman who took some drugs and alcohol and isn't sure of events", but it seems obvious that she was raped. DNA samples from three guys none of whom were

She may have mental health issues that will now continue to be ignored. Even the Durham area police allude to this by saying she may believe she was raped. She very well could have been. But it's curious that no one is questioning how a traumatic event could be affecting this woman's choices. There is a lack of

I feel as if cases like this, whether Mangum was raped or not, and whether she stabbed her boyfriend in self-defense or not, it helps us talk about what it means to be a victim of a crime.

I can't quite figure it out, as I am the beard lover of all beard lovers, but Jon Hamm might be the only man I don't like better with a beard.

Someone should tell him that if he's working with the deaf, he doesn't need to know so many different languages.

Huh. My brain is revolted but it seems that my genitals now support this choice 100%.

When is the world going to aknowledge THIS GUY:

Agreed. Her feminism reminds me Snooki and Jwoww (and not in a snotty pejorative way). She wants to look how she wants to look and she doesn't want to be reduced to her appearance. She also values female friendships and women. It's not full blown academic feminism, but it sure as Hell isn't bad.

It's sad that the women in the audience were so snarky about her comment.
She was articulate here. I'm happy to see that she is breaking away from that lecherous jerk she was married to. Good for her.

Those girls laughing at her:

Inexplicably, I feel that Stodden understands America better than we do ourselves, and has created a sort of beautiful-monster-type that we both desire and fear. And she does it with such pizzazz. Quickly, someone write their dissertation about her and the latest Franzen angry-essay.

Reading these responses with incredible intrigue o_O

I wish I could star this comment until it was out of the grays, because that's exactly how I feel about this piece.

Ok, so yelling is bad, but a heavy hand on the shoulder and a whispered admonition to behave in a voice that says "I will fucking END you," is still okay, right?

Yeah, the studies on whether or not "spanking" was good or bad for kids actually looked at "abuse." The idea that all corporal punishment is abuse and harmful isn't actually backed up with hard evidence.

I went to elementary school in Florida in the 80's and corporal punishment was very much the way things were done.
