Just found out! MPD report to the Mayor. Last night “federal officials, including at the White House, inquired about their powers to take control of the city’s police department.” DC officials objected and will challenge any takeover in court. per WaPo.

The police were largely missing for large portions of the protests in Minneapolis, but people still started smashing and burning shit, so I don’t think that’s the answer.
