I've had to deal with this recently too. Various shades of black, grey, dark blue, etc. are all appropriate. Lots of skin is not.
The article references the entire menstrual cycle not menstruation which is just a part of the menstrual cycle. PLUS, the 'increased activity' referenced occurs at the midpoint of the cycle i.e.: around ovulation, not menstruation.
