Basic stuff like oil changes are easy with the drain plug access flap. My only other point of comparison is the B5.5 Passat. That car required removal of the entire belly pan for even a simple oil change. In addition, the belly pan was much harder to remove and install compared to the E46.
The E46 isn’t much different underneath. Most cars these days have several plastic underbody panels. Even a basic Corolla has several. I believe the benefits are mostly in NVH and aerodynamics.
