Exactly. I guess my frustration—as a formerly incarcerated woman and a woman who works with formerly incarcerated girls, women, and trans women—has to do with this show being heralded as an insightful look into the world of women in prison. So many viewers will be introduced to this reality through this show and the

I agree with you. But even if the show portrays the perspectives of poor white and racialized women, it still centers on the experiences of a white, privilege woman. We learn about prison through her experience, her memoir, her naivete and seeming innocence. This is what is problematic about it. Our entry into what

I agree. I really enjoyed the show, but (echoing everyone else) Piper's story is really stale in comparison to the other characters. And I think you are totally correct in the assumption that it's a story told from the perspective of a white person. Even when the other characters are telling their stories, it's pretty

The problems with the system are actually addressed in the show. It's very obvious to the viewer that Piper gets special treatment because she's white, pretty, and well-off. There's a scene where one of the correction's officer is super harsh on a black woman and then is immediately all smiles-and-rainbows to Piper.

I'll let the show itself address that issue for you!

I do agree with you on that, but it also gives white girls like me an entry point into a world we might never otherwise feel a part of. It's the reason that Doctor Who always has a companion from modern-day Earth. There's a character to explain things to us.

I have a similar reaction to the show's set up (I haven't watched it yet, though). For me, its just disappointing that there has to be a white character in the story. I feel like it could be just as good without a white woman positioned in the center. But film/TV creators think that white people won't watch a

I had the exact same concerns upon seeing the trailer for it, but those fears were (refreshingly) unfounded.

I'm inclined to agree with that sentiment but have slowly come around. This was another nice piece on the show that convinced me I should give it a chance.

As a riff on "Take The A Train" and the meaning of that song, I think it works.

I do believe that people have the capacity to change. In the case of domestic violence, it is often not possible within the same relationship that the abuse happened in, but new relationships can blossom and be healthy. Though- I have only seen this after the abuser has gone through treatment of some kind.

Oh Boris. How is it that he can say things that would make me hate and detest any normal person, but I still have a soft spot for him? It's why he's so dangerous. He's the Olenna Tyrell of British politics.

If someone says they're pro-life... and would never allow someone pregnant with their child to have an abortion.

I have seen a few comments about the increased tuition at universities, and while I cannot speak for all states I know three major state systems that have similar stories. I am a full time student and employee within the state university system. In 2008, all the state universities were notified that they had to return

I was far enough below the poverty line to get enough government assistance to educate myself with minimal debt. I now sit pretty with my degree and a very modest pile of loan repayments to make, and then I turn to my classmates that came in from the middle class...

By socialized healthcare do you mean France? Where healthcare is number one in the world? Compared to the U.S. where healthcare is 37th? Give me a break.

Following orders is not an excuse. Nuremberg trials are the permanent reminder of that.

How in the hell is giving married couples preferential treatment in the housing market, equivalent to giving preferential treatment to people who buy in bulk?

Well, actually, I think the second wave would call it a symbol of oppression. The third wave is very "choice" oriented, so as long as no one is being forced to wear it (and that conversation is always a fascinating one) I can't imagine too many third wavers giving a shit.
